Travel vaccines are important for protecting your health when visiting other countries, as they can prevent diseases that might be more common in the destination country than in your home country. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It's primarily spread through the ingestion of contaminated food or water or through direct contact with an infected person. The virus is more prevalent in regions with poor sanitation and hygiene practices, which makes travellers to certain countries particularly vulnerable. The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for travelers to countries where hepatitis A is common, including many parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Eastern Europe. The vaccine provides effective protection against the virus, significantly reducing the risk of infection. Getting vaccinated against hepatitis A is a key preventive measure, especially if you plan to visit areas with lower standards of sanitation, or if you are unsure about the safety of the food and water. The vaccine is typically administered in two shots, the second one being given 6 to 12 months after the first. Immunity begins to develop within 2 to 4 weeks after the first shot. Once the full vaccination series is completed, protection lasts for many years and can be life-long. The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all travelers to endemic areas because it's safe, effective, and can prevent a disease that, although often mild, can sometimes lead to severe complications, especially in older adults and those with pre-existing liver conditions. It's part of the standard travel vaccination package for many destinations where hepatitis A transmission is a concern, and for many destinations, it is mandatory. Contraindications: You cannot have this vaccine if: You are pregnant. You have had an allergic or hypersensitive reaction to this vaccine in the past. You currently have a high temperature (fever), or are unwell. You are allergic to any of the following, which may be present in trace amounts: Water for injections Ethanol, anhydrous Formaldehyde 2-Phenoxyethanol Polysorbate 80 Medium 199 Hanks (without phenol red), a complex blend of amino acids (such as phenylalanine), mineral salts, vitamins, and additional elements Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, used for adjusting the pH
